Pen Versus iPad

Like most parents, I tend to take my kids out to eat more often when it's school holidays. And generally, if you are already out with friends or family, you just head to the local cafe or restaurant for lunch. These holidays we dined at a few new places across Sydney.

    One thing really surprised me.

That there are still so many still using pen and paper for order taking.

This not only looks so unprofessional, but quickly became quite frustrating. It's really annoying the amount of times, the waiter gets the order wrong because when reading back our order, can't even decipher their own writing.

    By Pen!

On one occasion, my birthday in fact, we were a table of 20, and decided on a new flashy restaurant that just opened in our neighbourhood. Here we were in a new restaurant, with beautiful decor and really ticking all the boxes visually. But then came the tedious task of taking down 20 people's orders..... by pen!

    What's Ideal

Writing boscaiola.... with no mushroom but a side of mushroom sauce on the side, and then multiplying modifications for 20 people with my family of picky eaters, just was not an ideal situation- not for the waiter and certainly not for us!

It didn't make sense that in a brand new restaurant that visually looked to not spare any expense on the layout and fittings, didn't think to spend a couple grand on a point of sale system.

    Final Thought

So it got me thinking..... how expensive are pos systems? With a little research I discovered there are complete hardware and software packages for under $1200 and in particular one company, Sassco (a north Sydney based company) offers affordable pay by the month packages for a complete point of sale system, as low as $99 monthly. So from an eager diner, if you're an owner in the hospitality industry, please consider investing in a POS system, for the growth of your business and the return of your customers.
