Point of Sale (is also referred as POS, pronounced “poz”) solutions are a combination of hardware, software and support. Quite often, business owners can buy their own hardware, however choosing the right software is the important step.

Things to look for when purchasing a POS solution for your small business; restaurant, café or pizza shop:

    • - Software interface simplicity
    • - Ongoing fees
    • - Credit Card charges (for EFTPOS)
    • - Support
    • - Hardware

Hardware investment is usually low; there are thousands of touchscreens on eBay at competitive prices. For complete solutions, you will need touchscreen, receipt printers, cash drawer and kitchen printer. For advanced solutions you may require: waiter tablets (remote devices), kitchen or coffee display, an integrated EFTPOS machine or what is currently known as "Mobile Online POS Payment".

Australian Point of Sale Software provides do not supply these EFTPOS machines, you will need to contact your Bank, but it's critical that the software you choose has EFTPOS integration. E.g: click EFTPOS on touchscreen, total amount is displayed on machine.

To keep your monthly bank charges low, consider Commonwealth Bank of Australia, which does charge low monthly fees. For point of sale complete solutions, consider SASSCO POS Systems which has a low software cost and no ongoing fees. WHAT TO LOOK FOR

For restaurant and café owners, ongoing fees are influential factors when choosing the right solution. We have compared different provides and encourage end users to carefully consider the following when choosing your next system:

    Hardware

Touchscreens, printers, wireless routers are a critical factor for a 'stable' solution. Restaurant managers want a stable, headache free system that is online 24 hours a day, 7 days a week; they excel in managing businesses, serving food and not troubleshooting computer/network problems. To ensure that you have the right hardware, consider buying Hewlett-Packard Touchscreens which come with 3 year on-site warranty, Epson receipt and kitchen printers and CICSO routers.

    Simplicity and Speed

A good software solution consists of a user friendly interface, few buttons to click (shortcuts) - quick and fast software response time. Although this is generally based on fast network (hardware); advanced POS software plays a major role. For a fast and easy to use system, consider Micros or SASSCO.

    Ongoing Fees and Support

If you've made a decision to get an iPad POS, I personally disagree and highly do not recommend it (please read my article about "5 Reasons why you should not buy an iPad POS System"). In summary, iPad POS have high ongoing fees because of the iCloud hosting services they rely on. However, support when needed is critical for any shop owner and not only hospitality businesses. A 24/7 support agreement is a must in every point of sale contract agreement.

    Summary

The best approach to get the best point of sale system would be to get quotes from 3 different POS suppliers, compare the value of the quote with the pricing and keep in mind that if the prices aren’t matching, many providers have a ‘match rate’ policy to win your business.
